firmware detection after installation with firmware=never

I create this dedicated discussion after my question on viewtopic.php?p=798525#p798525.
On viewtopic.php?p=797124#p797124, I read that firmware=never would even skip free firmware, so we should use firmware=free parameter to include free firmware only? (this is not mentioned on https://wiki.debian.org/Firmware#How_to ... e_firmware)
What command should we use to do the free or non-free firmware detection and installation that was ignored after using firmware=never? (e.g. maybe a way to run hw-detect after installation)
If there is a free firmware missing, would an error also be displayed in the result of the dmesg command, like for non-free firmware?
