Recording not working

i am using Debian 12 with Pipewire and the Volume control shows sound activity but the tab for "recording" shows " no applications is currently recording audio" even though I have tried several recording application.It appears the record apps can not interface to the recording device. this has happened on two Debian 12 machines.
