So, I have an older Alfa USB wifi adapter, that I used to use in Kali. It's an Alfa AWUS036NHA, which has an Atheros AR9271 chipset.
When I connect it in Windows 7 (VM) or some other Linux distros (also VMed), it is detected fine and able to be used for connecting to wifi. Therefore, I can deduce that the device, its' antenna, and the cable are working fine and can be eliminated. It also worked on the majority of bare metal (not VM) OSes I've tried it in. This must be a driver/firmware issue.
iwd (iwctl) cant detect it, but i do get this with lsusb:
