[Discussion] Smart App Alternatives

I was a go to guy for smart phone tweaking of all kinds. I left that world a decade ago and had no intention of returning. I carry a KaiOS flipper with no data plan, it's wonderful. If I show someone my flipper, they smile, speak a little slower and louder...and I just go with it.

Problem: More and more things utilize smart apps, either android or apple. Most of these trinkets and doodads I can avoid, but the latest gadget I may not be able to avoid are the recent 5G routers moving towards using a smart app for admin and the traditional browser interface is no longer available. So I'm stuck.

It might be a good idea to use these smart apps since the security may be improved. Admin access now comes only from a QR code registered device, so maybe no need to visit the admin page to edit the mac whitelist for example. But simple things like a changing passwords, ssid, misc features if any like storage, are not accessible without the app. I'm looking forward to the day a power cycle isn't working and a reset to defaults blows out any user specifics.

So options: Get a simless second hand device just for the purpose or maybe an android vm.

I've utilized android-x86 in the past and it now seems defunct.

I found BlissOS that seems active, no test yet.

Any field wise opinions?
