[Solved] Cinnamon persists even after removal

I wanted to create a user experience similar to that of deepin by downloading cinnamon via apt on my debian install without any previous desktop managers (I had startx and openbox for graphical applications). However, I quickly realised that cinnamon was not what I was looking for and decided to sudo apt purge it. However, my system did not revert back to its previous behaviour:
  • The gnu grub screen was altered,

there were dozens of new startup processes and services at boot,

startx opened up to “failed to load session “cinnamon”” without a cursor.
I have since removed lightdm which stopped it booting into a graphical interface in the first place but all other problems remain. The initial apt-get was 407mb? but this remove only freed up 100MB.

Any help would be appreciated!! I don’t mind just going back to openbox but optimally, I would love to completely undo the changes done by cinnamon.
