deb12 installation failure: grub-install dummy fatal error

hey folks,

I'm attempting to set up a new headless deb12 minimal installation with software raid1 and keep receiving the above error during the boot loader installation.

this is a bare metal installation, no other OS.
cpu is a i5-12600t
motherboard is an asus Pro WS W680M-ACE SE,
dual SSD's for the os

for uefi, i have the bios set to "other" (as opposed to Windows UEFI)
and for the keys i have them set to standard
CSM module is disabled (which oddly, i'm unable to 'enable', dunno if i have to remove the drives first or set the bios to defaults.. it's just grayed out).

all my searches online point to a setting in the bios, which vexes me since i would think the latest version of debian wouldn't have any issues whatsoever with uefi.

i haven't tried the installation without raid1. and if you wondering whether or not intel rst and "bios raid" could be part of the problem, i have all of that disabled so it's pure MD software raid from the debian installer (I assume that's the way it should be).

any thoughts?

Thank you!
