Accidentally Disabled Passwords in PAM /faceplant

Greetings and thanks in advance,

Made a silly error, and while installing an additional PAM package, I accidentally unticked the dialog box for basic password authentication. Yep. So obviously, I cannot now use sudo, su, etc. to correct this error, nor can I even sign in during startup, after unlocking my LUKS main drive.

Attempted to reboot with Debian Live, hoping to unlock the LUKS volume, and then access /etc to troubleshoot, but neither the DVD nor USB that I burned will boot when selected, giving:

"Failed to open \EFI\BOOT\mmx64.efi - Not Found
Failed to load image ??: Not Found
Failed to start MokManager: Not Found
Something has gone seriously wrong: import_mok_state() failed: Not Found"

But I suspect this will be OK, if I address the main issue.

Going into GRUB2, attempted to enter Rescue Mode, and after manually setting root to the Live USB, boot failed giving:

"You are in rescue mode. After logging in, ... Cannot open access to console. the root account is locked. See slogan(8) man page for more details. Press Enter to continue."

Reading that man page, and attempt those commands in GRUB unsuccessfully, I am not sure what further to do. Thanks for any insight.

OS: Bookworm/stable (12.5.0?)
Kernel: 6.1.0-19?
Hardware: Lenovo ThinkPad W541, i.e. early UEFI
