Getting Distrobox to Work At a Baseline Level

I've tried in a virtual machine and a simple "apt install distrobox ca-certificates" allows "distrobox enter" to download the default fedora image and enter it as a user, but when I try that on my host I'm greeted with "Error: OCI runtime error: unable to start container "e8e4606c3b28ea98d23103d2afe7a6ae32cb72db9be3b7df00c7a4b3598b647e": crun: error creating systemd unit `libpod-e8e4606c3b28ea98d23103d2afe7a6ae32cb72db9be3b7df00c7a4b3598b647e.scope`: got `failed`".

I've looked online and I can't find anything on getting stuck at this point. I've also compared the packages installed in the vm and on the host, and nothing is missing. I also can't find anyway to further debug why the systemd unit cannot be created in order to use the software. Is anyone else more familiar with this and can help?
